More info on what these funding cuts mean:
Did you know that HIV prevention programs in the US managed to reduce new HIV transmissions by 12% in 2018-2022? The trump administration wants ot “trim the fat” on public health, meaning our communities will suffer increased risk of HIV infection.
Getting rid of HIV programming doesn’t make sense, financially. The CDC currently invests $1 billion annually in HIV prevention. That might sound like a lot of money, but not when you consider how cost effective it is. Experts estimate that each new HIV infection results in $500,000 of healthcare costs over a person’s lifetime. If the CDC prevents HIV infection for just 20,000 people, they’re breaking even. We know that education, testing, and accessing to prevention meds like PrEP help waaaay more than 20,000 new HIV cases per year.
Health experts warn that without these programs, states and localities would lose crucial resources for HIV testing, PrEP access, and community outreach, potentially returning to higher infection and mortality rates. Call your elected officials NOW and say you OPPOSE funding cuts to the CDC’s HIV Prevention Program.
